Rogério Ceni (1992–2015: São Paulo)

In June 2015, Rogério Ceni scored his 128th goal, entering in the club's top 10 goalscorers list. Then he announced his retirement from professional football on 6 December 2015.


Mikel Arteta (2011–2016: Arsenal)

On 15 May 2016, Mikel Arteta has announced his intention to retire after coming to the painful realisation that he no longer merits his place at the highest level.


Daniel Agger (2014–2016: Brøndby)

On 9 June 2016, at the age of 31, Agger announced his retirement at Brøndby at the expiration of his contract.


Nemanja Vidić (2014–2016: Internazionale)

On 18 January 2016, Nemanja Vidić's contract with Inter Milan was ended by mutual consent. 11 days later, on 29 January, the defender announced his retirement from the game with immediate effect.


John Arne Riise (2016:Aalesund)

On 11 March 2016, Riise announced on his Twitter page that he had signed for Aalesunds FK, marking his return to the club at which he began his career. Not too long after signing the contract Riise decided to retire from professional football, in June 2016.


Luca Toni (2013–2016: Verona)

After Verona was seen relegated from the 2015–16 Serie A season, Toni confirmed his retirement from football on 4 May 2016.


John Heitinga (2015–2016: Ajax)

On the 25th of June 2015, Ajax announced that Heitinga would return to the club, joining on a free transfer from German side Hertha BSC. However, after playing only two Eredivisie matches in the first half of the season, Heitinga decided to retire from professional football on 1 February 2016. 


Stefan Reinartz (2015-2016: Eintracht Frankfurt)

Stefan Reinartz announced his retirement, at age 27, on 27 May 2016.


Peter Odemwingie (2015–2016: Stoke City)

After struggling for playing time with Stoke in 2015–16, Odemwingie joined Championship side Bristol City on loan in March 2016.


Djibril Cissé (2015: Saint-Pierroise)

In June 2015, Cissé signed for JS Saint-Pierroise of the Réunion Premier League on a month-long contract starting in September of the same year. On 20 October 2015, Cissé announced his retirement from football at the age of 34 due to injury.


Diego Milito (2014–2016: Racing Club)

After spent the last three seasons with Racing Club in his native Argentina, Diego Milito retired at the end of the current Argentine Primera Division season, on May 21, 2016.
